Just curious about some of the favorite Kids & education Web sites for
the people this group.

Whhat sites do you let your kids visit and why? During school? How
about after school?

Just education sites? Or education and games too? Does it matter to
you if the site has advertising? If so, how does it affect your
decision to let the kids visit?

Thanks for the feedback!

In Australia we are seriously trying to encourage kids to use the web
as a resource. There is a governmet sponsored site, Learnscope for
people working on on-line learning projects
http://www.learnscope.anta.gov.au/learnscope/home.asp

I have my own personal website http://www.metalbashatorium.com with a
links page containing hundreds of links that can be used by teachers
to supplement their lessons. Mostly technical type links but music,
science and history are things that are integrated into our lessons
here, so there are appropriate links there too. These include links
to free on-line courses that are great for "emergency" teacher
lessons.

I welcome feedback suggestions for inclusion to this list as within
the next few weeks I will be opening a new site, driven by php with
message boards and importantly a searchable links data base. I'll
keep you posted.

For me, it's http://www.PathsOfLearning.net, which is a resource website for
support, information, and research-based methods of making education more
student-centered and focused on the whole child. It is an inspiration to me,
which trickles down to the children, but it's not a site FOR
children--except older ones who are interested in education matters! As far
as concrete ideas, to use right away with children, and to bolster lessons,
I like Enchanted Learning. I've had children use the site directly for
animal reports that they do. Personally, I do not do games, and steer away
from sites with bold, blatant advertising (esp. with young children who do
not have the media literacy yet to deal with advertising effectively), but
some sites have small ads to keep them running, which I can understand, as
long as it's appropriate.
Good question!

I like this site as a friendly place for my students to play on as a
reward.

During school, I take the whole class to http://www.thatquiz.com for
math testing. I make all the students do a test online every day. They
can practice at home using the same site.
