We (my husband and I) are currently debating whether or not to send our

five year old to a public or private school for kindergarten in the
fall. We live in a big city and aren't really sure some of the
characteristics to look for in a successful school. My side of the
argument is that public schools are beginning to fail us (society)
because of all the complex issues that they face these days. However,
my husband disagrees and thinks that those issues will not affect our
child's education. So in general, are public schools failing parents,
students, and society or have I become to cynical since I became a
parent?

Public schools today are scary to me. There are so many children
experiencing things they wouldn't normal experience if they weren't
there. I was homeschooled till the sixth grade, and I feel like it was
a good move on my parents part. I know that it is not an option for
most parents to homeschool, and private school can be very expensive,
but when it comes to your children sometimes you are willing to make
sacrifices. Your child will get an education in public school, but you
will have to supervise their learning and make sure they are on track
with their class. Teacher's don't always keep track of where their
students are in the material, so therefore if you are going to send
your child to public school you need to supervise their learning.
